One of the most important things that you will need to know as a serious singer is singing from your/my diaphragm. You probably see this being said all around the internet when people mention how to sing.
You may wonder what exactly is your diaphragm? How in the world are you supposed to sing from it if you don’t even know what it is in the first place? Well today’s blog post is about helping you out with this now!

What and Where is it?

This is a sheet of muscle underneath your lungs which helps you regulate your breathing to make sure you get the most out of each breath. Now that out know where and what it is...

How to Locate Your/My Diaphragm Exercise

You can actually locate your diaphragm by laying flat on the floor and taking a book. Then placing it on your stomach. Breathe in as much air as you can while you’re laying on the ground. At the same time while you’re breathing in air you’re going to be pushing the book up as high as you can with your abdominal/stomach muscles. The muscle you’re actually using at this time is your diaphragm and this should help you become more aware of it.
Now try singing. The muscle you feel moving in your stomach is your/my  diaphragm right there!:-]

How to Start Using it to Support Your Breathing when You Sing

Place your hand on your stomach and at the same time expand your stomach out by breathing in air to fill up your stomach. So you will be breathing in and expanding your stomach outwards at the same time. Once you have in enough air go ahead and breathe out while pulling your stomach in at the same time.

How to Strengthen Your Diaphragm

Basically you are going to stand up straight and then practice panting like a dog. (See Video above!)
While you are panting like a dog  practice sing a  simple  song like  “Mary had a Little Lamb” or  “Old McDonald had a Farm” this  will  help make your  diaphragm stronger when you sing. Practice this  at least 5 minutes or more several times a week until you are singing from your diaphragm naturally. This may take some time so be patient.

I hope this helped you out today:-] You now know where your diaphragm is, how to use it and how to strengthen it.

Top 5 Foods Not To Eat Before you Sing - Real Singing/Voice/Vocal Lessons

Stay Away from  These Food Items Before You Sing!

Dairy products - These have a way of leaving behind a  residue around and on your vocal cords. This can prevent you from singing  clearly and with elasticity.

Alcohol - This will naturally dehydrate every part of your body including any moisture  around your  vocal cords. Your vocals need this moisture to  be at their  best when you sing. So avoid this  before you perform.

Citrus  Fruits (yes this includes  Oranges) -These are  tasty but have a way of naturally  drying out  your  throat where your  vocal cords are located. So just  don't eat them before you sing.

Fizzy Drinks (like coca cola or sprite) - These can also be seen as a pretty  darn tasty but they  tend to  deposit  air in your stomach and  lead to burping when you  sing afterwards. So  do yourself a favor and  don't consume this until after you are  done with your performance if you really want it.

Junk Food - Last but certainly not least!  This will sap your energy  faster than  just about anything! Real singing takes a lot energy to  produce and you will burn out  quick if you are only  eating junk food to fuel you  day in and day out.  Good  foods like  apples, fish (not  fried),and brown rice will give you energy to run on for  a while.

I hope you found this helpful:-]

Good luck, Marvin Lee
